Emma is a mixed method social scientist with experience conducting health service research in a range of international settings. She applies realist approaches to evaluating programme implementation and impacts. Prior to focusing on UK health and social care, she led an exploratory study in Nepal of maternity service hygiene infrastructure and facility upgrading policy, and she was involved in the process evaluations of two MRC-funded implementation trials of antenatal quality improvement interventions in Nepal, India and Indonesia. She has also led a study using hospital records to examine obstetric referral pathways in Nigeria.
Her research interests include maternity services, referral systems and evaluation methods.
Emma enjoys baking, dance parties with her four-year-old daughter, and attempts to grow anything beyond weeds in the garden.
