Professor Martin Knapp

LSE Professor of Health & Social Care Policy

Martin has conducted research in the social care and health fields for many decades, focusing more recently on social care, child and adult mental health, dementia and autism – both in the UK and elsewhere. Much of his work uses economic arguments and evidence to inform policy discussion and practice development. He collaborates regularly with community organisations, service providers and public sector commissioners. A core aim of every one of Martin’s studies is to ensure that the evidence generated has relevance for either practice or policy.

Martin is Professor of Health and Social Care Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), based in the Department of Health Policy. He is also Professorial Research Fellow in the Care Policy and Evaluation Centre at LSE. From 2009 to 2024, Martin was Director of the School for Social Care Research, part of the National Institute for Health and Care Research in England. Since 2023, he has been Programme Director of the NIHR Research Programme for Social Care. Among other roles, he has been a Ministerial advisor, Select Committee Specialist Advisor, and a member of numerous strategic research and policy groups.

Martin has been running around in circles-competitively for many years (if gradually more slowly), but now only figuratively.
