Professor Vittal Katikireddi

Glasgow Health Inequalities Lead

Vittal Katikireddi is Professor of Public Health & Health Inequalities and an honorary Consultant in Public Health at Public Health Scotland. His chief research interests are in improving the development and application of evidence to inform healthy public policy. He has expertise on multiple axes of health inequality (such as socioeconomic position, gender and ethnicity) and public health policy. He is based at the School of Health & Wellbeing at the University of Glasgow.

Vittal's research aims to improve knowledge about the social determinants of health, with a view to identifying the best approaches to improve population health and reduce health inequalities – both for current but also future threats. He uses a range of methods to investigate the broad topic of ‘healthy public policy’, including natural experiment methods, social epidemiology, microsimulation, policy analysis (e.g. qualitative interviews and document analysis) and systematic reviews. He works closely with a diverse range of disciplines, including economists, sociologists, geographers, statisticians, computer scientists and diverse clinical disciplines, as well as with policymakers within the UK and internationally.
